Somer’s Sunshine Park

Somer’s Sunshine Park is named for Somer Thompson, a 7-year old Orange Park resident who was kidnapped and murdered in 2009.

Spurred by the tragedy, the Town Council dedicated a 1-acre parcel of land, located at the corner of Debarry Avenue and Gano Avenue and owned by the Town, as a park that would bear Somer’s name and provide a peaceful place to spend time with family and friends.

Business owners and residents rallied together and donated approximately $25,000 in labor and materials. Community members and local organizations gathered in March 2012 to put the finishing touches on the park, which includes a walking trail, butterfly garden, shade trees, picnic areas, and benches.

Somer’s Sunshine Park is a shining testimony to the spirit, unity, and dedication of the Orange Park community.
