Commissioner Welcome Letter

As Chair of the Clay County Board of Commissioners, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you. Clay County, Florida, is a place with small towns and big passions located southwest of Jacksonville with the entire eastern border nestled along the banks of the scenic St. Johns River. Within the county’s 644 square miles, you will discover natural beauty, rich history, and a vast array of natural and agricultural resources minutes away from lively business environments.

Founded in 1858, our county has developed into a diverse mixture of suburban and rural areas resulting in a vivid panorama of productive, modern living; superior, grade “A” schools; a well-trained, skilled workforce; bustling retail centers and economic vitality. Clay County is a haven for those who love nature and the outdoors, while being home to some of the region’s best golf courses, public parks and walking & bicycling trails. Add the enjoyment of boating, fishing, canoeing or kayaking on our waterways and you can see why people love Clay County.

While you are in Clay County, we invite you to explore the many experiences we have in our small towns. Be sure to enjoy:

• Our rich military history. Whether an historical marker siting the 1716 Fort San Fransisco de Pupo, our Civil War action or the multiple locations used in World War II, like Lee Field, Reynolds Industrial Park and Camp Blanding, we stand by our military’s strength, honor and history. Be sure to visit one of our three area military museums that will engage you in our military story.

• Exploring our more than 93,000 acres of parks, 35 miles of trails and 39 square miles of waterways. You are sure to find some great picture spots.

• Shopping and dining at many of our area small businesses. Delicious coffee from local roasters, unique entrees and familiar favorites are served at our locally owned eateries. Looking for that perfect gift or souvenir to remember your visit, our local retailers feature locally made products, repurposed vintage ware, antiques and specialty gifts. If you run out of time, this trip, please come back to enjoy the uniqueness of the place I call home. I hope you enjoy your time here and look forward to seeing you exploring the small towns and big passions Clay County has to offer throughout the year.

Sincerely,

Betsy Condon, Chair
